A late 18th century English oak sofa, with fresh sand coloured linen upholstery. The construction is mostly hand-carved oak, with a delightful curved pine back and pine bottom boards. There are early hand forged Rosehead nails throughout. The sofa also has nails from the 19th and 20th century, as it had been reinforced and repaired over the years. It’s very sturdy and firm. The finish appears to be original and has been refreshed with a coat of fine museum quality wax. Definitely a fine updated example of a late 1700s sofa.

The edging and fabric give it a slightly later Regency era look with a Jane Austen feel. It’s rather small for a sofa, by modern standards. It would make a brilliant bench for the foot of a king size bed or as a foyer sofa. It’s best suited to moderate use, but definitely a sturdy old English oak piece, with a rich history.

Please feel free to ask any further questions! It’s an adorable piece, which could suit many locations in a dwelling.

A handmade English Oak Neoclassical chair from the Edwardian Period. The hand-carved details are fantastic. The seating surface and seat back, have a Neoclassical styled figure embossed into the leather. There is a small torn area in the leather seating surface, which doesn’t affect the integrity of the chair. You’ll notice, the chair legs are slightly irregular and signs of hand construction are present. The Shellac finish appears to be old, but in fine condition.

With the slight irregularities in the legs and bracing, the chair is very solid and rather smart looking. A full sized adult can comfortably sit in this chair.

I could see the chair used for an entry hall or placed next to a small table. It has a lot of character and the details are interesting to look at.

The chair will ship by UPS. Please be in contact for shipping charges to your location. International shipping is offered. Buyer is responsible for shipping & handling charges. All furnishings ship with a great deal of care, and are insured for the full sale price.

Offered at $450.- SOLD

A lovely original Aquatint Engraving of Oxford, from 1802. It’s a very large engraving with fine details and excellent colouring. There is a very slight bit of foxing at the top of the engraving. The overall condition is good and is clean of any serious damage. It’s an impressive print, in size and overall condition.

The frame is black and likely from the later part of the 19th century. The glass is wavy, which is very desirable, as it shows the print was framed a very longtime ago.

It’s remarkable, how little the architecture has changed in busy Oxford, since the Industrial Revolution! Besides street lights, cars and bicycles, the picture hasn’t changed much.

Published by Wm. De La Motte, Oxford, April 14th 1802.

Please be in contact for shipping charges. Insured UPS Ground is offered on this piece. There is a $30.- handling fee, for proper packaging, specified for art work. Buyer is responsible for all shipping related charges.

Paul Louis Salvan (1877-1962), French

Oil on Canvas, Size 27cm x 35cm

Offering an early Paul Louis Salvan painting.  He’s a listed French painter and well sought by collectors.  Definitely late 19th century and an early work for the artist.  Impressionistic in painting style and of rural France, which was a favourite of many artists from the period.  The colours are brilliant and the style is fairly loose, with a fine grasp of scale and composition.

The painting is in fantastic condition, with no cracks or surface wear.  The colours are bright and the painting is clean.  The framing is likely original.  The rear of the stretcher has the dimensions, 35cm x27cm and an anchor emblem stamped into the top stretcher.  The frame does show typical wear to the gilt and black paint.

Overall a fine little painting from a known French artist.  A very nice piece!

Offered at $1100.- SOLD

Portrait of a Beautiful 1930s Lady
Dated 1930
By George Hill (1898-1969)
Stunning Large Scale Painting in Gilt Frame
Oil on Canvas
Framed 39″ x 43″
Offered at $2400.- SOLD

Offering a beautifully painted portrait of a young lady in a seated pose, with Classical styled clothing. The style has it’s roots in the 19th Century Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. There are several features, which indicate Pre-Raphaelite elements and overall feel. The composition and colours are exceptional. A very well painted portrait, with fantastic detail. The painting is nearly scaled to life-size, therefore the painting is rather large.
The gilt frame is of a very high quality, consisting of two frame layers. The gilding is in fine condition, with only minimal areas of it scratched off. The frame is very well constructed and heavy. Definitely suited to a finely painted portrait. It appears the frame was custom made from the same period, meaning it was likely original to the painting.
There are many fine cracks and puckers in the painting, but no missing paint or fading. Vibrant colour and details make it timeless. The paint seems to be firmly affixed to the high quality canvas. The painting hung over an old New England fireplace mantle, hence the distressed texture to the paint surface.
She’s absolutely lovely!

19TH Century Portrait of a Gentleman
By Florence A. Ross (1870-1949)
RHA (Royal Hibernian Academy)
Framed 30″x36″(canvas approximately 23 1/2″x 29 1/4″)
Oil on Canvas
Large Portrait
SOLD
Offering a large oil painting of a Victorian gentleman. The painting is of Irish origin and was painted by a very skilled artist. The details are incredibly well executed and the use of shadows, light and proportions make the portrait exceptionally lifelike. The portrait is almost full scale, hence the painting is fairly large. It’s surrounded by a fine looking vintage frame, with a strong wire on the back.
The letters RHA appear before the artists signature.  RHA is a Dublin based institution, founded in 1823.  The institution was originally chartered by 30 Irish artists to promote the arts.  Florence A. Ross had attended the RHA.
The painting has some distress and repairs to the skin on the forehead and cheek. There are two small torn areas on the left side and some very small areas of missing paint. The canvas is tightly stretched and well secured. I can imagine the portrait rested above a fireplace for many years, which explains the missing paint.

Cloister of San Gregorio
1874-1875
Oil on Canvas
Stretched & Not Framed
By D. Mailland Armstrong
Venice, Italy

Offering a lovely painting of a Venice scene. Painted by a well trained artist, as displayed by technique, composition and colour. The details are finely painted and the use of colours are sharp and brilliant.  It’s a rather old painting with some damage, but still shows many of the details.  I consider it Shabby Chic!  There are no rips to the canvas and the stretcher is strong.  The painting has been lightly cleaned and varnished. The details about the painting are present on the back of the painting, with a title, name of artist and location.  The lettering is likely original to the painting and appear to be written in an old hand.
SOLD

The painting will ship by UPS.  Insurance for the full amount of the purchase price will be added to your invoice.  There is a $10 handling fee, which includes proper packaging and a box specifically made for shipping fine art.  Buyer responsible for all shipping and handling fees.

JUPITERLICHT

MADE IN GERMANY

A very rare early German cinema/stage light, which has been rewired with a period fabric cord.  Would be a very stylish decorative living room piece.  The wiring can handle up to 500 watts, but for domestic use, such as using it next to a sofa, 40-100 watts would be sufficient.  It currently has a 40 watt bulb fitted, which I find ideal to read under.

The construction is very solid, with many pieces made of a light alloy and a cast iron base.  The height adjustable handle is made of ebonized bakelite.  The original glass and internal reflector are in exceptional condition.  The wiring had been redone for domestic use, with an on/off switch attached to the cord and a new period style plug.  The fixture and base have been repainted.  At a point in it’s life, someone hand-painted the light housing, so it had to be sanded, in order to achieve a smooth finish.  The light has some dings, as expected of a period item, which evidently got lots of use.

During the 1920s, Berlin was one of the worlds premier film, cabaret and arts centres.  The classic movie, Metropolis was filmed during this period.  Jupiterlicht must have been the most advanced and desired lighting during the era.

There are very few surviving Jupiterlicht lights from this period, none of which seem to be for sale.  It’s also highly unusual to see one, which had been made for the North American market.  Truly a rare piece!

Offered at $1595.- SOLD

The item will ship in two boxes by UPS.  It must be insured for the full sale amount.  Please be in contact for shipping and handling charges.

International shipping offered.  Delivery is available throughout New England and the boroughs of New York City.

E. Leitz Wetzlar (Leica) Rangefinder

Manufactured in the 1930s

Measurement in Feet (Imperial/Standard)
Made in Germany

Offering an early Leica rangefinder in excellent working order.  There are signs of age and use, but a very solid vintage bit of Leica kit.  This rangefinder could be mounted to most early cameras, from various manufacturers.  Although, an early Leica camera owner would find it very desirable.
The range-finder is very accurate. The dial is in feet, as opposed to metres. It was obviously made for the UK or US markets. The dial moves very smoothly and the viewer is easy to use. There are some scratches to the glass, but nothing which would impair it’s use. The brass is showing through in various areas of the black paint and nickel plated pieces. It’s in fantastic shape for it’s age and will work perfectly with an early Leica camera. Likely manufactured in the mid-1930s. Made in Germany.
The item will ship insured by either Priority or Express.  For shipping rates please be in contact.  It’s your choice!
Will ship internationally.  On international shipping,  I cannot be held responsible for items held up in customs, loss or damage.
$290.00 SOLD
